UN PEQUEÑO AÑADIDO A LA ENTRADA SOBRE LOS GUITARRISTAS

No quiero estar corrigiendo la entrada cada vez que pasa algo que sea digno de mención y que tenga que ver con el tema, así que como hay algunas novedades relativas al mismo voy a comentarlas en un breve aparte.

Apenas tres meses después de haber escrito dicho artículo he de decir que DANIEL MONGRAIN ha subido mucho en lo que a mi admiración se refiere. No es sólo su ya conocido trabajo con VOIVOD, unido a la más que reciente edición del último discode estos, SYNCHRO ANARCHY (2022), que tiene (como no podía ser de otra forma) muy buena pinta, sino también haberme puesto de lleno con los ya mencionados MARTYR, que fueron un combo (también canadiense) de death metal técnico de mucho cuidado, liderado por Daniel y su hermano FRANCOIS, antes de unirse el primero a Voivod y saltar a la fama. A esto se une el hecho de haber conseguido su música a través del propio Daniel, quien se ha comportado como un auténtico campeón en este tema, contestando cada correo cuando he tenido alguna duda acerca del envío y siendo más que simpático, lo cual no me ha extrañado para nada. Genial guitarrista, genial tipo. Que quede constancia.

En cuanto a los propios Voivod decir que voy entrando poco a poco en su genial nuevo disco (este grupo, al igual que Martyr, no es de fácil escucha ni susceptible de gustar a la mayoría. Son cualquier cosa menos convencionales) y aunque aún es pronto para decir si superará a su genial predecesor THE WAKE (2018), se va a quedar muy cerca de cualquier manera y, a pesar de la primera impresión, parece un disco más agresivo que el anterior.

Destacar la nueva página web del grupo, la cual puedes configurar como más te guste eligiendo de fondo una de las portadas de sus discos que te ofrecen, y que además tiene su propia tienda del grupo, donde entre otras cosas se pueden adquirir por un precio muy asequible tres conciertos privados para ver en streaming de manera ilimitada en la propia web (si tienes una smart TV mejor aún). Se trata de las HYPERCUBE SESSIONS, grabadas en el estudio RADICART (muy cerca de Trois-Rivières, en Canadá) y consisten en un set variado grabado el nueve de Agosto de 2020 la primera, el disco NOTHINGFACE (1989) tocado de pe a pa la segunda (30-05-2021), y lo mismo pero con el clásico DIMENSION HATRÖSS (1988), más su versión de BATMAN, la tercera. Ésta última he elegido yo para probar, de momento, al ser ese disco uno de mis preferidos del grupo, y la verdad es que es una maravilla, con alguna sorpresa incluida. Es lo más parecido a tenerlos en tu salón. Gran idea.

VOIVOD

En otro orden de cosas, destacar tres películas que tienen que ver con algunos de los protagonistas de aquella entrada sobre los guitarristas y que he conseguido ver en este tiempo:

- IRISH TOUR '74: La peli documental de TONY PALMER, de 1974, sobre el añorado RORY GALLAGHER y su relación en esa época tan difícil con su Irlanda natal, por la que no dejó de girar (incluyendo Irlanda Del Norte, por supuesto) sin importarle todo lo que eso podría suponer. Soy poco objetivo con este humilde genio y no voy a hacer ninguna excepción ahora: aunque esta parte de su carrera no sea mi preferida la música es alucinante de igual manera, y Rory y sus secuaces eran algo especial encima de un escenario, pero es que además está escucharle hablar acerca de sus cosas e interactuar con fans, etc, en otros ámbitos.

Buena cantidad de extras en el DVD, por cierto.

IRISH TOUR '74

- NOT DEAD YET: película de 2012, dirigida por JESSE VILE, sobre la trayectoria de JASON BECKER, desde que era un niño hasta las fases más recientes de su enfermedad, pasando por su, por desgracia, breve estrellato. Obviamente, sabes que la historia que se cuenta te va a llevar por momentos duros y tristes, pero es alucinante el hecho de que, además de ver a todos los músicos y diferentes personalidades que tienen cabida, una de las cosas más acertadas y llamativas de la misma es su tono positivo y optimista, destacado al final con más énfasis, y conseguido principalmente por la maravillosa y encomiable personalidad del propio Jason (sin dejar de destacar a su familia). Ejemplar a todos los niveles. En este sentido, la guinda la pone MARTY FRIEDMAN, su gran amigo y compañero en CACOPHONY, cuando al hacer acto de aparición en el concierto de homenaje a Jason que se ve al final del todo dice a la audiencia os lo aseguro, no hay otro lugar en el mundo en el que prefiriese estar que aquí y ahora, declaración que es recibida con un rugido de aprobación.

El DVD contiene bastantes extras también, con imágenes familiares de Jason y grabaciones antiguas. 

JASON BECKER: NOT DEAD YET

- DEATH BY METAL: otra peli que sigue una línea muy parecida a la de la anterior, para contar la trayectoria de CHUCK SCHULDINER, quien simplemente no necesita presentación. Se trata de una película de 2016 dirigida por FELIPE BELALCAZAR y que guarda, como ya he dicho, muchas similitudes con la de Jason Becker, incluida por desgracia un drama aún mayor. Pero si nos quedamos con el lado más amable de las cosas, lo que también hay (y en cantidades industriales) son imágenes de archivo del bueno de Chuck y un montón de entrevistas y declaraciones de familiares y músicos que pasaron por DEATH o que se relacionaron con él de alguna manera, lo que supone un auténtico desfile de luminarias del metal extremo americano.

En lo que a mí respecta, al ser Death uno de mis grupos preferidos, este documental es indispensable y más que entretenido, además de todo un homenaje a una de las personalidades más importantes y queridas del género, y gran persona de paso. Y como no podía ser de otra manera, extras a tutiplén también.

A small remark about the guitar players entry.

I don't want to correct that entry every time something noteworthy concerning it happens and that's why, given there are some novelties about this issue, I'll proceed to comment them in a small add-on.

Barely three months after having written said piece I have to say that DANIEL MONGRAIN has improved drastically when it comes to my looking up to him. Not only because of his well-known work with the mighty VOIVOD, together with the fact that they have just released their latest album, SYNCHRO ANARCHY (2022), which (how couldn't?) looks very good, but also because I've begun to devote myself to the music of the aforementioned MARTYR, which were a tech death metal combo, also from Canada, which was second to none, and led by Marty himself and his brother FRANCOIS, before the former joining Voivod and his rise to prominence. Besides the fact that I've purchased their albums via Mongrain himself, who has behaved with me concerning this like the true gentleman he is, answering every single mail I've sent regarding my doubts about the shipment and being beyond nice, something that didn't catch me off guard. Brilliant guitarrist, top notch guy. May it be stated for the record.

Concerning Voivod themselves, I'm digging deeper and deeper in their great new album (this band, just like Martyr, is neither easy-listening, nor meant to be enjoyed by everybody. They are everything but conventional) and, even if it's still too soon to know whether it will top its fabulous predecessor THE WAKE (2018) in my personal ranking, it's going to be a very close call no matter what. And despite my first impression, it's beginning to show itself as a more aggressive affair than said previous album.

I have to highlight their new website, which you can set up as you wish choosing one of their album covers on offer as wallpaper, and which also has its own store, where you can find (among other stuff), for a very reasonable price, three private shows to be watched on streaming as many times as you want. These are to be watched on the website itself, but if you happen to own a smart TV, all the better. I'm talking about the HYPERCUBE SESSIONS, recorded in the RADICART studios (very close to Trois-Rivières, in Canadá) and the first one is an assorted live set recorded on the ninth of August, 2020, the album NOTHINGFACE (1989), played from start to finish, the second one (30-05-2021), and the same thing but with the classic DIMENSION HATRÖSS (1988), plus their cover of BATMAN, the last one. The third one has been my first choice so far, to test the whole experience, because that's one of my favourite albums of the band and, truth is, I have no complaints. It has a surprise too and is the closest you can get to having them playing for you in your own living-room. Great idea.

VOIVOD

On a separate issue, I'd also like to highlight three documentary films which relate to a few guitar players named on that entry and which I've managed to watch since I wrote it:

- IRISH TOUR '74: TONY PALMER's 1974 documentary about the much-missed RORY GALLAGHER and his relationship with his native Ireland, which he never quitted touring (including Northern Ireland, that goes without saying), never afraid of the consequences, during those difficult times of turmoil and bloodshed. I know I'm biased with this humble, soft-spoken genius, and I won't make any exceptions now: although this stage of his solo career may not be my favourite one, the music is top-notch all the same and Rory and his henchmen were always quite something on a stage. And there are also those bits in which he talks about several topics, interacts with fans, etc, in different settings.

Great deal of extra stuff on the DVD, by the way.

IRISH TOUR '74

- NOT DEAD YET: a 2012 film, directed by JESSE VILE, about the life and musical career of guitar prodigy JASON BECKER, since he was a kid to the most recent stages of his disease, going through his sadly brief tenure at stardom. You know in advance that the story you're about to witness is going to take you through rough and sad patches, but it's amazing the fact that, besides seeing and listening to all those musicians and personalities who parade in front of your eyes, one of the most remarkable and target-hitting aspects of it is his optimitic and positive nature, highlighted all the more by the end of the movie, and achieved mainly beacuse of the wonderful and praiseworthy personality of Jason himself (and of course because of all his awesome family). An exemplary and uplifting lesson to be learnt by everybody. In this regard, the icing on the cake may be MARTY FRIEDMAN's (his old friend and guitar buddy in CACOPHONY) words, who, when introduced at the tribute concert to Jason which takes place at the end, addresses the crowd by saying I can tell you this, there's no place in the whole world that I'd rather be than right here and right now, a statement which is next saluted by the audience with a roar of approval.

Extra stuff galore on the DVD as well, which includes old family footage.

JASON BECKER: NOT DEAD YET

DEATH BY METAL: another documentary film which navigates a very similar path to the one seen in the previous movie, to tell the life, work and miracles of CHUCK SCHULDINER, someone who needs no introduction. This is a movie which dates back to 2016 and was directed by FELIPE BELALCAZAR, and bears many similarities with Becker's, with, unfortunately, an even bigger tragedy to boot. But if we stay on the brighter side of things, what we also find (and in spades) is family footage of good old Chuck and tons of interviews and testimonies from family and fellow musicians who were also in Death or somehow crossed paths with Chuck, something which means a real parade of american extreme metal luminaries.

As far as I am concerned, being Death one of my most beloved bands, this film is a must-see, and beyond entertaining, besides paying tribute to one of the genre's most important and biggest names, and a great person as well. And as it couldn't be otherwise, tons of extras too.
