Me gustaría, con el tiempo, poder hacer una crítica de al menos un disco de cada uno de los grupos y artistas que más escucho y a los que más aprecio tengo. Por eso VOIVOD tienen que estar en ese saco.

Y ya que aún no tengo nada previsto para ellos me conformaré de momento con ir hablando del espectacular libro que acerca del arte de su batería y miembro fundador (y única constante en toda la historia de la banda, que además es muy larga) MICHEL LANGEVIN (también conocido como AWAY) se editó en 2009.

Pero antes un breve repaso al perfil del autor del mismo, el periodista, crítico y escritor canadiense MARTIN POPOFF (28-04-1963, Castlegar, British Columbia). Popoff es conocido por ser uno de los periodistas más famosos en el ámbito del heavy metal y no en vano ha sido frecuentemente descrito como el que más. En el momento de la publicación del libro que nos ocupa ya había escrito hasta veintiséis libros (aunque la cifra que aparece en su web es muy superior) mayormente acerca del mundo del heavy metal y el rock duro, además de colaborar con varias publicaciones y muchas cosas más. La última página de este libro está dedicada a él y por lo visto, al igual que el propio Away, también se dedica a la pintura.

Para quien pueda estar interesado, su página web es bastante detallada acerca de su CV, ocupaciones y proyectos. Merece la pena echar un vistazo ya que también hay un índice de sus podcasts y enlaces a los mismos.

por la izquierda

Voivod son un grupo especial. Tan especial que me atrevo a decir que son únicos. No se me ocurre ningún grupo con el que puedan ser comparados y, además de escapar de etiquetas fáciles, su carrera trasciende lo musical, yendo mucho más allá. De esto es mayormente responsable el personaje que nos ocupa, Michel Langevin (30-05-1963, Jonquière)

Ellos son un grupo canadiense formado en 1982 en Jonquière, un municipio de la ciudad de Saguenay (ubicada en la región conocida como Saguenay-Lac Saint Jean, en Quebec). Quitando tres músicos que han ayudado al grupo en el puesto de bajista durante épocas de transición, y mayormente en directo, no son demasiados los músicos (todos con su propio apodo) que han pasado por la banda durante los más de cuarenta años de carrera que los contemplan, siendo su formación inicial y la más conocida la que sigue: el propio Away a la batería, JEAN-YVES THÉRIAULT (BLACKY, 15-12-1962, Jonquière) al bajo, DENIS BÉLANGER (SNAKE, 09-08-1964, Jonquière) como cantante, y el tristemente desaparecido atípico guitar hero DENIS D'AMOUR (PIGGY, 24-09-1959, Saguenay), que falleció en Montreal el 26 de Agosto de 2005.

Desde el thrash metal con mucha influencia del punk de sus inicios, pasando por su acercamiento a territorios más progresivos, épocas más simplistas musicalmente hablando y el metal algo más industrial, hasta su época actual, en la que combinan todo lo anterior de manera más que brillante, Voivod no han necesitado ser un grupo muy conocido para dejar una marca imposible de borrar, con al menos quince álbumes de estudio, lo que les confiere un estatus legendario y a la vez de culto. No son un grupo para todo el mundo ni fácilmente asimilable, ni falta que hace, lo que les otorga aún más atractivo.

Todo esto dentro de un ambiente futurista, espacial, apocalíptico y de ciencia ficción, creado en gran medida por el talento de Away, creador de todas las portadas del grupo y de montones de ilustraciones de todo tipo, perfectamente reconocibles, que adornan dichos discos y todo el merchandising de Voivod, y que hacen que, como ya he dicho antes, todo lo relacionado con el grupo trascienda lo musical. Voivod son un grupo no sólo para disfrutar a través de los oídos, sino también con los ojos, algo que se antoja necesario ya que las creaciones de Away son una maravilla (cómo pasar por alto la portada de su tercer disco, KILLING TECHNOLOGY, de 1987?) y eso es algo que no se puede apreciar con una descarga online, sino con el disco en la mano.

Y también con un libro como éste, que recoge cientos de dibujos de Away (muchos no vistos antes), y en el que el propio artista nos explica cómo se crearon, a partir de qué, sus influencias, sus técnicas, y qué pasaba en torno al grupo y en su cabeza en cada momento. Y es que no sólo están las ilustraciones, sino que como el propio Popoff explica, este libro sirve además como una breve biografía del grupo, recogiendo recuerdos de Away previos a la creación de Voivod (su infancia, lo que le llamaba la atención y cómo empezó a dibujar), hasta más o menos 2008, cuando el grupo estaba iniciando su genial etapa actual tras reclutar al prodigioso guitarrista de la zona DANIEL MONGRAIN (CHEWY, 04-07-1976, Trois-Riviéres), fundador además, junto a su hermano FRANCOIS del acojonante grupo de death metal técnico, MARTYR.

Cierto es que hace unos años que se editó el libro, y portadas tan chulas como las de sus últimos tres discos (TARGET EARTH, THE WAKE o SYNCHRO ANARCHY), de 2013, 2018 y 2022 respectivamente, no aparecen, al igual que las de los varios EP's que han editado desde entonces, pero es lo que hay. A cambio, el libro recoge además multitud de declaraciones de gente como Snake (llamativa, por sincera y sorprendente, la parte en la que cuenta cómo se alejó de todo para curar ciertas adicciones, teniendo incluso algún que otro trabajo mucho más mundano) o Blacky, y de otros músicos que han pasado por la banda, como el famosísimo bajista JASON NEWSTED (sí, ése), conocido en su época en el grupo como JASONIC, o de ERIC FORREST (E-FORCE), que compaginó el bajo con su labor como cantante en la época más industrial del grupo, cuando éste se convirtió en un trío tras las salidas de, primero Blacky, y después Snake. También hablan otros músicos y personas varias ajenas a la banda y por supuesto, encontramos un recuerdo al bueno de Piggy y todo lo que supuso su fallecimiento.

Animo al lector a curiosear un poco, por internet, en las alucinantes creaciones de Away (contrapunto perfecto para los riffs disonantes de alguien como Piggy y puesta en escena de todas las aventuras, entre otras cosas, de ese vampírico lord espacial llamado Voivod) y, por qué no, a hacerse con el libro, ya que no creo que queden muchos. Yo adquirí el mío en la genial web del grupo y allí sigue aún disponible. Es el típico libro grandote en pasta dura, muy llamativo a primera vista, pero que además tiene bastante texto, aunque se lee más que rápido.

Y por supuesto animo a escuchar a Voivod. Como en otros casos, yo desearía haber empezado antes, pero nunca es tarde si hay ganas. Además acaban de editar hace unos días su nuevo disco, llamado MORGÖTH TALES (2023), un disco que incluye regrabaciones de canciones más o menos oscuras de la banda (incluida su tempranísima demo CONDEMNED TO THE GALLOWS), extraídas de todas sus épocas (y de casi todos sus discos) menos la época actual con Mongrain, que se ve representada a su manera con la inclusión de un tema nuevo, el que da título al disco. En este tema aparece, cómo no, el bajista canadiense DOMINIC LAROCHE (ROCKY), quien es el miembro más reciente del grupo, tras la segunda salida de Blacky, y que debutó en estudio con Voivod en el EP de 2016 POST SOCIETY. Por cierto, E-Force y Jasonic también participan en este disco, lo que supone, por si no fuera suficiente, que Voivod vuelven a alejarse del camino fácil, distanciando este lanzamiento de el típico recopilatorio de grandes éxitos.

I'd like, little by little, to review at least one album by every band and artist I listen to the most and I am most fond of. That's why VOIVOD have to be there.

And given I don't have anything in store for them yet, I'll be content, for the time being, with writing about the awesome book which about the art of their drummer and founding member (and the sole constant in the entire band's history, which happens to be very long) MICHEL LANGEVIN (AKA AWAY) was issued in 2009.

But before that, a little something also about the book's author, journalist, critic and writer from Canada MARTIN POPOFF (28-04-1963, Castlegar, British Columbia). Popoff is known for being one of heavy metal's most renowned journalists, and not in vain he has very often been depicted as the most famous one. By the time this book was issued he had already published as many as twenty six books (although the current figure on his website is far superior), mostly about hard rock and heavy metal, besides cooperating with some magazines and much more. The last page in the book is devoted to him and, aparently, he also devotes himself to painting, as Away himself does.

To whom it might be of interest, his website is really detailed when it comes to his resume, activities and plans. It is worthy to take a look, for there is also an index for his podcasts and links to them.

Voivod are a very special band. So much that I'd dare saying they are unique. I cannot think of another band they could be compared to and, besides not being very easy to be pigeonholed, their career trascends the music to go much further beyond. This is something which can be mostly blamed on the person we are talking about, Michel Langevin (30-05-1963, Jonquière)

They are a canadian band formed in 1982, in Jonquière, a borough of the city known as Saguenay (located in the region called Saguenay-Lac Saint Jean, in Quebec). Leaving aside three musicians who have helped the band on bass guitar, mostly live and during transitional times, Voivod's line up has been very stable for most part of the forty plus years of their career, with every musician having their own nickname. Their first line up, and the most famous one, was as follows: Away himself on drums, JEAN-YVES THÉRIAULT (BLACKY, 15-12-1962, Jonquière) on bass, DENIS BÉLANGER (SNAKE, 09-08-1964, Jonquière) as the singer, and sadly untimely demised atypical guitar hero DENIS D'AMOUR (PIGGY, 24-09-1959, Saguenay), who passed away in Montreal on the 26th of August, 2005.

From the punk infused thrash metal of their beginnings, going through their getting more progressive, more simple times (music wise) and heavy metal with some industrial leanings, to their current times, in which they manage to blend all the foregoing in a brilliant manner, they did not need to become very famous to leave their own indelible mark, with at least fifteen studio albums, something which gives them both legendary and, at the same time, cult status. They are not easily approachable and definitely not for everyone. They take time, and that makes them more appealing.

All this encapsulated inside a futuristic, spacey, apocalyptical and sci-fi environment, courtesy, above all, of Away's talent, creator of every album cover and tons of drawings of all kind, very easy to recognise, which grace said albums and every single piece of Voivod's merchandise. Thanks to this, everything Voivod related trascends the music and they are a band suitable to be enjoyed not only through the ears, but through the eyes as well, something which is almost mandatory, for Away's creations are amazing (how to overlook the cover of Voivod's third album KILLING TECHNOLOGY, from 1987?). And this is something which can't be valued with an online download, but with the album in your hands.

And also with a book like this one, which gathers hundreds of drawings (many of them not previously unseen) and gives Away some room to explain how they were created, from what, his influences, his technics and what was going on through his mind and concerning Voivod at every turn. Because this is not only about his art, but also, as Popoff himself explains, serves the purpose of being a Voivod's biography of sorts, collecting Away's memories previous to the band (his childhood, what made him tick and what got him started with drawing), until more or less 2008, when the band was about to begin his glorious current phase after recruiting local guitar prodigy DANIEL MONGRAIN (CHEWY, 04-07-1976, Trois-Riviéres), also founder, together with his brother FRANCOIS of the truly amazing tech-death band MARTYR.

It is true that this book was published some years ago, thus awesome album covers such as the ones on their three last albums (TARGET EARTH, THE WAKE or SYNCHRO ANARCHY), from 2013, 2018 and 2022 respectively, are missing, as well as those of the several EP's they have released since, but it is what it is. In return, the book contains many testimonies by people like Voivod's very own Snake (remarkable, because of being so honest and surprising, his memories of him getting away from everything to run away from some addictions of his, even having in the meantime a few regular and much more mundane jobs) or Blacky, and by some other members of the band, like the famed bassist JASON NEWSTED (yes, that one), known as JASONIC while with the band, or ERIC FORREST's (nicknamed E-FORCE), who doubled as bass player and singer in the more industrial phase of Voivod, when they became a power trio after the departures of, first Blacky and then Snake. We can also find some other musicians and people external to Voivod, and, that goes without saying, a fond remembrance of good old Piggy, and everything his passing meant.

I encourage the reader to surf the internet in search of Away's art (perfect counterpoint to Piggy's dissonant riffing and stage of every adventure, among many other things, of that vampire lord from outer space called Voivod), and, why not, to purchase the book, because it wont last. I got mine via Voivod's wonderful website and is still available. It is your usual big, hardcover book, very striking at first sight, but also with a lot of text, despite being read really quick.

And I also encourage people to listen to Voivod. As in many other cases, I wish I had started long ago, but it's never too late, or so they say. They have also released, a few days ago, their new album, called MORGÖTH TALES (2023), which is comprised of re-recordings of some of their deeper cuts (also their early demo CONDEMNED TO THE GALLOWS), taken from all their phases (and from almost all their albums) but the current one with Mongrain, which has its own moment with the new track, the one the album is named after. This song showcases canadian bass player DOMINIC LAROCHE (ROCKY), who is the newest Voivod member, after Blacky's second departure, and who made his studio debut with Voivod on the 2016 EP POST SOCIETY. By the way, E-Force and Jasonic also contribute and take part on this album, which means, as if everything was not enough, that Voivod have once again walked off the easy path, distancing this release from the average greatest hits album.

We have reasons to celebrate. At least I have.
