RICARDO IORIO

Hace un par de días me desperté por la noche y, viendo que no me podía volver a dormir, decidí pasar un rato curioseando por Internet para volver a hacer sueño. Me acordé de RICARDO IORIO, un tipo que, más allá de su labor como músico a todos los niveles, siempre dejaba unas declaraciones bastante polémicas y sinceras, y además las acompañaba de una gestualidad bastante curiosa y, siendo sinceros, cómica, por lo que me fui a YouTube para ver alguna de sus entrevistas.

Y resulta que lo primero que vi fue un vídeo cuyo titular hablaba de su muerte. Me quedé bastante sorprendido porque no había leído nada al respecto y fui a Google a salir de dudas, aunque lógicamente pocas podía haber. Y efectivamente. Como era de esperar, no sólo Iorio había fallecido, sino que el deceso había tenido lugar más de dos meses antes.

Me quedé triste y un poco noqueado. Iorio era una persona aún muy joven y, aunque no fuese exactamente santo de mi devoción, ya que era alguien muy controvertido, peculiar y polémico, con quien no sé si tendría mucho en común (en este extracto de su biografía en Wikipedia se puede ver que hay para todo y para todos: IDEOLOGÍA), sí que le tenía cierto aprecio, quizás también por todo eso (siempre en el marco de la cultura y la idiosincrasia argentinas, que mayormente desconozco) y por su indudable autenticidad, pero sobre todo por su tremenda labor musical. Y me llamó la atención enterarme más de dos meses después. Ya sé que ni V8 ni ALMAFUERTE, dos de las bandas que creó, son METALLICA precisamente. Para nada. Ni siquiera HERMÉTICA, el monstruo thrash metal argentino por excelencia y su grupo más conocido (y de paso el más importante de la historia del metal argento) se acercó mínimamente a algo así, pero es llamativo el hecho de que, en una era en la que gracias a internet y a las redes sociales puedes saber cualquier detalle, por mínimo que sea, de cualquier personaje ridículo, y además casi al momento, me tenga que enterar tan tarde del fallecimiento de la figura más emblemática del metal argentino, y encima de casualidad. Parece que se trató de una muerte natural, debida a un infarto. Ricardo se había trasladado a vivir al campo, por lo visto con la intención de cumplir el sueño de vivir en el sitio al que le llevaban a veranear sus padres de pequeño, pero dicho sitio quedaba bastante lejos de cualquier hospital y, por lo que he leído, suponía incluso conducir campo a través (a ripio, como dicen los argentinos) durante algún tramo. Él se sintió mal aquel fatídico veinticuatro de Octubre pasado y su mujer llamó a la asistencia que, comprensiblemente, no pudo llegar lo suficientemente a tiempo. Quién sabe si se hubiese podido hacer algo más de haber vivido Iorio en otro lugar, pero esto es algo que él sabía y aceptaba, y con lo que incluso bromeaba con su habitual acidez.

No es mi intención repasar su vida y milagros, ni tampoco ahondar en su esforzada y dura existencia (tuvo que vivir el horrible trago del suicidio en 2001 de su primera mujer, ANA MOURÍN, madre de su única hija, SOFÍA, de quien ya estaba divorciado) sus opiniones o sus declaraciones (España no le resultaba muy simpática y la letra de la canción de Hermética, LA REVANCHA DE AMÉRICA, deja lugar a pocas dudas), sino sólo recordarle a él y a su música, ya que su trayectoria no sólo es gigantesca en cuanto a calidad, sino que abarca la friolera de unos cuarenta y cuatro años, nada menos. Y es que V8 se crearon en 1979, siendo Ricardo poco más que un crío. Se dedicó a componer, a tocar el bajo y a cantar, aunque esto lo hizo muy ocasionalmente en Hermética, la H inmortal, con los que logró un éxito notable en Argentina y Sudamérica, gracias sobre todo a un disco como ÁCIDO ARGENTINO (1991), el más grande del heavy metal de allí. Tanto que llegaron a tocar junto a SLAYER, KISS y BLACK SABBATH en la primera edición del festival MONSTERS OF ROCK argentino en 1994, su gran año. También habían abierto para MOTÖRHEAD en 1992, e incluso el propio LEMMY llegó a comentar que le hubiese gustado que la versión de NO CLASS que el grupo había hecho dos años antes para INTÉRPRETES, su EP de versiones, hubiese sido más lenta, aunque agradecía que alguien hubiese pasado de las canciones más típicas de Motörhead a la hora de hacer una versión del legendario grupo inglés. Todo esto se puede ver en el documental que NICANOR LORETI hizo sobre Hermética en 2011, llamado LA H.

La trayectoria de Hermética fue muy corta y el grupo se deshizo por problemas personales entre el difícil Iorio y los demás integrantes del cuarteto (TANO ROMANO, guitarra, CLAUDIO O'CONNOR, cantante, y CLAUDIO STRUNZ, batería) que nunca se llegarían a arreglar (aunque hubo buen rollo entre Iorio y Romano en contados encuentros puntuales bastante después, a pesar de todas las declaraciones y los temas que uno y otros se dedicaron en plan vengativo), y estos otros tres músicos formarían MALÓN, otro de los grandes grupos del thrash argentino, justo después de la desaparición de Hermética. Este grupo sigue en activo, aún con Romano y O'Connor, habiendo salido Strunz hace algún año.

Todo esto no hizo más que aumentar la dimensión legendaria de la banda en el imaginario colectivo de sus fans, sobre todo argentinos. De ahí el documental anterior e incluso la creación, por parte de esos otros tres miembros de Hermética (aunque Strunz también lo debió dejar), de un grupo de auto homenaje llamado LA H NO MURIÓ, debido al lema que los fans del grupo crearon tras el fin de éste.

Ricardo crearía los mencionados Almafuerte (ya también como cantante), en una onda que con los años terminaría no siendo tan extrema (llegando a abrir para gente como OZZY, Metallica o MEGADETH) y sí más rockera, y actualmente seguía en activo con su carrera en solitario, sus proyectos, poesías y colaboraciones.

No me resisto a poner este tronchante extracto de una de sus entrevistas, que decía mucho de la vitalidad del personaje y de lo apasionado e incluso extremo del mismo, carne de polémicas, memes y seguramente arrepentimientos. Tampoco el segundo, acerca de su peculiar visión de lo que suponía viajar y conocer sitios.

A couple of days ago I woke up at night and, being unable of falling asleep again, I began nosing around the internet to regain sleep. I remembered RICARDO IORIO, someone who, beyond his work as an all round musician, always left controversial and brutally honest statements, besides combining them with an excessive and, being honest, quite funny body language, so I went to YouTube to watch some of his interviews.

And to my surprise the first thing I saw was a clip whose headline talke about his demise. I was left in awe because I had not read anything about it and I googled it to dissipate any doubts, although understandably, there were none. Indeed. As expected, not only Iorio had passed away, but the tragic event had taken place more than two months prior.

I got sad and shocked. He was still very young and, despite not being someone I looked up to, because he was someone really peculiar and controversial, with whom I'm not sure to have a lot in common (this excerpt from his biography on Wikipedia really shows: IDEOLOGY), I was kind of fond of him, maybe due to all those previous things (always within the context of argentinian culture and idiosyncrasy) and to his unquestionable authenticity, but above all because of his immense legacy as a musician. And I could not stop thinking about the fact that something like that had flown under my radar for more than two months. I do realize that neither V8, nor ALMAFUERTE, two of the bands he helped create, were exactly METALLICA. Not at all. Not even HERMÉTICA, the bona fide argentinian thrash metal monster and his most famous band (and also the most important metal band from Argentina ever) came even close to something like that, but is striking the fact that, in a time when thanks to the internet and the social media, every single thing, no matter how insignificant, from every single person, can be known almost at once, I have to know about the passing of the most important person in Argentina's metal history this late and, to top it all off, by chance. Apparently, it was a natural death, due to heart attack. Ricardo had moved to the countryside, pursuing the dream of living where his parents took him on vacation when he was a kid, but that place was really far away from any hospital and, by what I've read, it meant driving cross country (a ripio, as the argentinians say) during some stretches. He felt sick on that fateful 24th of October and his wife called an ambulance which, understandably, took very long to reach his place. Who knows if something else could have been done to save his life, had him lived somewhere else, but that is something he knew and accepted, and even joked with with his usual acid sense of humour.

It is not my intention to go over his life and struggles (he had to go through something as horrible as his then ex wife and mother of his only daughter SOFÍA, ANA MOURÍN, taking her own life back in 2001), his opinions or his statements (he wasn't exactly fond of Spain and the lyrics to the song LA REVANCHA DE AMÉRICA, by Hermética, left little doubt about it), but only remember him and his music, for his career has been huge quality-wise, but it also spans fortyfour years, no less (V8 were founded in 1979, when he was still in his teens). He devoted himself to write songs, play the bass and sing, although he rarely sang while in Hermética, the immortal H, with whom he achieved great success in his country and South America, mostly thanks to an album like ÁCIDO ARGENTINO (1991), the biggest metal album from his country. So much that they even played along SLAYER, KISS and BLACK SABBATH in the first argentinian MONSTERS OF ROCK festival in 1994, their greatest year. They had also opened for MOTÖRHEAD in 1992, and even LEMMY himself said that he wished the cover Hermética did of NO CLASS on their INTÉRPRETES EP (only covers) had been slower, although he admired the fact that the band had not chosen any of the hits by the legendary english band when it came to do a cover song. All this can be seen in LA H, the documentary film which NICANOR LORETI did about Hermética in 2011.

Hermética's career was short and they disbanded due to internal fights between the difficult Iorio and the other three members (TANO ROMANO, guitar, CLAUDIO O'CONNOR, singer, and CLAUDIO STRUNZ, drums) which never properly repaired (although Iorio and Romano shared good mutual feelings during very rare encounters, later on, despite all things said and the songs they had dedicated to each other in vengeful fashion), and these three remaining musicians created MALÓN, another one of the great argentinian thrash bands, right after Hermética's disbanding. This band is still active, with Romano and O'Connor, having Strunz left a few years ago.

This only increased the band's legendary dimension in the fans (mostly from Argentina) collective imagination of the band. Hence the aforementioned film and even the creation, by Romano, O'Connor and Strunz (although the drummer also left) of a self-tribute band called LA H NO MURIÓ, after the motto the fans created after Hermética ceased to exist.

Ricardo would go on to create Almafuerte (already as the singer as well)ya también como cantante), in a musical direction which ended up being more hard rocking than extreme (they opened for acts like OZZY, Metallica or MEGADETH), and he currently remained active with his solo project, his poetry and his collaborations.

I can't help leaving here a funny excerpt from one interview which spoke volumes of the guy's vitality, his passion and even his extremism, target of controversies, memes and, most likely, a few regrets.
