DAMN THE MACHINE: THE STORY OF NOISE RECORDS - 2017 / DAVID E. GEHLKE

Dado que acabo de terminar una pequeña entrada sobre otro libro de este autor (THE SCOTT BURNS SESSIONS, 2023), y mientras espero a que esté disponible el último que ha escrito, BORN HUMAN (acerca de DEATH y CHUCK SCHULDINER, y que verá la luz en Noviembre), voy a escribir cuatro cosas sobre este primer libro escrito por DAVID E. GEHLKE, allá por 2017, sobre NOISE RECORDS, ya que no sólo trata sobre algo que me interesa bastante, si no que recuerdo que me gustó mucho cuando lo leí. No sé por qué no escribí nada sobre él en su día; quizás no fuese algo que me apeteciese hacer en su día, aunque estoy pensando que quizás este blog ni siquiera existía cuando terminé de leer este libro.

Parece que me he aficionado a los libros de este autor. Tiene cinco en total, contando el que está a punto de salir, ya que además de éste y del de Scott Burns, ha escrito NO CELEBRATION: THE OFFICIAL STORY OF PARADISE LOST (2019) y TURNED INSIDE OUT: THE OFFICIAL STORY OF OBITUARY (2022).

En cuanto al libro en sí, no es de la propia discográfica de lo único que habla, ya que ésta no se entiende ni tendría sentido sin la figura de su controvertido y peculiar fundador, KARL-ULRICH WALTERBACH, quien teniendo como base MODERN MUSIC RECORDS GMBH (también creada por él, en 1981), y a partir de una de las divisiones de ésta, llamada AGR (AGGRESSIVE ROCK PRODUKTIONEN), que sólo publicaba punk, ya fuese americano o en idioma alemán (destaca aquí SLIME, de Hamburgo, que puede ser la banda más famosa de la escena punk alemana, y de la que también se habla en el libro), puso en marcha Noise en 1983. Se habla también del ascenso de Walterbach dentro del negocio, y un poco de cómo eran las cosas en Alemania, y más en concreto en Berlín, antes de caer el Muro, lo cual añade valor al relato.

Noise no sólo se dedicó al thrash metal, por supuesto, pero pronto se convirtió en el primer sello europeo especializado en dicho género, gracias a grupos como SABBAT, VOIVOD, CORONER, KREATOR o TANKARD. En cuanto a otros géneros dentro del metal, por las oficinas de Noise han llegado a desfilar bandas tan conocidas como CELTIC FROST, SKYCLAD, GAMMA RAY, STRATOVARIUS, RAGE, RUNNING WILD y GRAVE DIGGER, entre muchas otras, y de todas ellas se habla, en mayor o menor medida, en el libro. Como también se habla de los tejemanejes de Walterbach y de sus peculiaridades, además de su tirante relación con algunos de los miembros de ciertas bandas. Por lo visto, este señor no estaba en el negocio para hacer amigos, y no se cortaba ni un poco a la hora de hacer lo que él creía mejor para el sello o expresar su opinión. No sólo en este libro (historia no oficial, por cierto, pero que contó con total cooperación por parte del empresario y de un montón de grupos de Noise), si no en otros sitios también, he leído acerca de las condiciones bastante duras de los contratos de Walterbach, y sobre el descontento de unas cuantas de sus bandas.

Cualquiera que haya leído el libro o sepa algo de este sello alemán tan relacionado con los años ochenta,  y tan familiar para muchos por llevar unas cuantas de las bandas europeas más conocidas de cuando éramos unos chavales, se habrá dado cuenta de que falta algo. Efectivamente. Mención especial merecen los también hamburgueses HELLOWEEN, quienes pasan por ser el grupo más exitoso de toda la historia de Noise y, si recuerdo bien, el favorito de Walterbach, según contaba el propio libro. El apartado dedicado a Helloween es, de largo, el más extenso del libro, y relata el ascenso a la gloria y la rápida y temprana caída de esta banda, además de todo lo relacionado con el pleito con EMI y sus consecuencias, muchas de las cuales propiciaron dicha caída. También se habla de INGO SCHWICHTENBERG, la llegada de MICHAEL KISKE y la posterior salida de KAI HANSEN. Por suerte, todos sabemos cómo terminó la historia.

Y mucho más, con muchos más protagonistas. Un libro que se lee solo si te gustan los grupos de los que se habla en él. Aquí debajo dejo un enlace, para quienes puedan leer en inglés, acerca de esta famosa discográfica y su fundador.

Muy recomendado, incluso más que el de Scott Burns, aunque la presentación en tapa dura del segundo es bastante más atractiva a primera vista.

Y se me olvidaba! El libro cuenta con un prólogo del mismísimo HANSI KÜRSCH, líder de BLIND GUARDIAN.

Given I have just finished a small entry about another book by this same author (THE SCOTT BURNS SESSIONS, 2023), and while I wait until his next one is available (BORN HUMAN, about DEATH and CHUCK SCHULDINER, which will see the light of day in November), I'm going to write a few things about this first book written by DAVID E. GEHLKE, back in 2017, about NOISE RECORDS, for not only the subject is one I like, but also I really enjoyed when I read it. I don't know why I didn't do it after reading the book; maybe I just didn't feel like it, although maybe this blog did not even existed yet, now that I come to think of it.

It looks like I'm taking a liking to this guy's books. He's got five in total, counting the one which is about to be published, because besides this one and the one about Scott Burns, He's also written NO CELEBRATION: THE OFFICIAL STORY OF PARADISE LOST (2019) and TURNED INSIDE OUT: THE OFFICIAL STORY OF OBITUARY (2022).

As for this book itself, it doesn't only talk about the label, for it can't be understood or measured without the figure of its controversial and peculiar founder, KARL-ULRICH WALTERBACH, who, having MODERN MUSIC RECORDS GMBH (also created by him, in 1981) as a starting point, and from one of its divisions, called AGR (AGGRESSIVE ROCK PRODUKTIONEN), which only released punk music, be it american or german-speaking (SLIME, from Hamburg, is the most remarkable band of the german punk scene, and it's also talked about in the book), started Noise in 1983. Walterbach's rise within the music business idiscussed as well, and also what things were like in Germany, and specifically in Berlin, before the Wall fell. This gives an extra value to the whole thing.

Noise not only devoted itself to thrash metal, of course, but it soon became that subgenre's first specialized european label, thanks to bands like SABBAT, VOIVOD, CORONER, KREATOR or TANKARD. Concerning some other metal subgenres, the Noise roster has been brimming with talent, with names like CELTIC FROST, SKYCLAD, GAMMA RAY, STRATOVARIUS, RAGE, RUNNING WILD and GRAVE DIGGER, among many others, and all of them are discussed, at least to a certain extent, within the book. Walterbach's shenanigans and peculiarities have their fair share of content as well, as do his strained relationship with some band members. Apparently, this person wasn't in this to make friends, and there was nothing he wasn't going to do to achieve what was best for the label or when it came to speak his mind. Not only in this book (non official history of the label, by the way, but which had the complete cooperation of the entrepeneur and many Noise bands as well), but somewhere else too, I've read about the very rough conditions of many of his deals, and about the discontent of a bunch of his bands.

Anyone who has read the book or is familiar with this german label so much linked to the eighties, and so close to us for having many of Europe's most important bands from when we were kids, may have noticed that there's something missing. Definitely. Special mention to HELLOWEEN, also from Hamburg, who happen to be Noise's most successful band ever and, if memory serves, Walterbach's favourite band, according to the book itself. The chapter about this band is, by far, the longest one, and tells everything about Helloween's speedy rise and early fall, besides everything related to the lawsuit with EMI and its aftermath. Most of the consequences prompted said fall. There's also room for INGO SCHWICHTENBERG, MICHAEL KISKE's arrival and KAI HANSEN's subsequent goodbye. Luckily for us, we all know how the story ends.

And a lot more, with many other main characters. A book which just flies by if you are into the bands from the old Noise roster. Here there's a link to a piece about the famed label and its founder.

Very much recommended, even more so than the one about Scott Burns, although the latter's hardcover presentation makes it much more appealing at first.

And I almost forgot! The book has a prologue by the one and only HANSI KÜRSCH, of BLIND GUARDIAN fame.
