ROBERT DUVALL

Otra de esas noticias que uno nunca querría recibir y a las que haremos bien en ir acostumbrándonos poco a poco, ya que el tiempo no espera a nadie. Uno de los mejores actores de todos los tiempos, el gran ROBERT DUVALL, acaba de dejarnos. Tenía noventa y cinco años, que son muchos, y estoy bastante seguro de que su paso por este mundo ha sido un viaje envidiable (lo cual me alegra), pero aún así, la noticia de su marcha me hace muy triste, como dice mi hija.

Robert Duvall es uno de esos tipos que, debido a la enorme medida de su talento, y a su larguísima carrera (a pesar de debutar bastante tarde, creo que a principios de los sesenta), ha trabajado con todos o casi todos los grandes, siendo él uno de ellos por derecho propio. Ver su nombre al lado del de leyendas como PECK, BRANDO, JANE FONDA, REDFORD, MCQUEEN, WAYNE, PACINO, CAAN, EASTWOOD, HACKMAN, HOLDEN, FAYE DUNAWAY o CAINE, además de muchos otros, y todo esto sin que su trabajo hubiese llegado aún a la década de los ochenta ni nombrado directores, lo dice todo. También en las últimas décadas ha compartido créditos con estrellas más jóvenes, como es lógico, destacando los PENN, CRUISE, KEATON, JULIA ROBERTS, MORTENSEN o BALE. Y muchos más. Toda una constelación de estrellas dentro de la cual, Duvall destacaba casi sin pretenderlo.

En cuanto a sus papeles, muchos a comentar. Demasiados como para hacer justicia al personaje en lo que pretende ser un breve homenaje a su figura. Algunos de ellos parte de la cultura popular de las últimas décadas, como lo son unas cuantas de las muchas películas en las que ha participado. Tenemos su muda aparición en TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD (MATAR A UN RUISEÑOR, de ROBERT MULLIGAN, 1962), absolutos aciertos como NETWORK (NETWORK, UN MUNDO IMPLACABLE, dirigida por SIDNEY LUMET, 1976) o la película por la que ganaría su único premio de la academia (cuando esos premios servían para algo y eran, al menos en principio, indicadores de la calidad de los productos premiados), TENDER MERCIES (GRACIAS Y FAVORES, de BRUCE BERESFORD, 1983).

Pero supongo que siempre será mayormente recordado por los que creo que son sus dos papeles más icónicos (por los que también estuvo nominado por la Academia): el consigliere TOM HAGEN en THE GODFATHER I y II (las dos primeras entregas de EL PADRINO, dirigidas ambas por FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA y estrenadas en 1972 y 1974 respectivamente), y el teniente coronel BILL KILGORE en APOCALYPSE NOW (1979, también de Coppola). Inolvidable el pequeño discurso de este último que comenzaba con la frase Me encanta el olor a napalm por la mañana, y terminaba con aquella otra no menos legendaria: Huele a victoria. De hecho, esa primera frase es tan absolutamente mítica que ocupa el puesto número doce, nada menos, en la lista de las cien líneas más míticas de la historia del cine que el AMERICAN FILM INSTITUTE elaboró en su día.

Parece ser que el actor ha fallecido en su casa y no se han hecho públicas las causas del fallecimiento, así que espero que haya sido algo natural y sin sufrimiento.

Another one of those news one would never wish to receive and to which we better get used to little by little, for time waits for no one. One of the best actors of all times, the great ROBERT DUVALL, has just left the building. He was ninety-five, which is a lot, and I'm pretty sure his time in this world has been an enviable journey (cheers to that), and yet, those things do not make the news of his demise easy to stomach.

Robert Duvall was one of those guys who, due to the enormous measure of his talent, and the length of his career (despite making his debut quite late, at the beginning of the sixties I believe), has worked with all the greatest actors ever, or almost, being him one of them in his own right. It speaks volumes about the sheer quality of his craft to see his name beside those of legends like PECK, BRANDO, JANE FONDA, REDFORD, MCQUEEN, WAYNE, PACINO, CAAN,  EASTWOOD, HACKMAN, HOLDEN, FAYE DUNAWAY or CAINE, besides many others, and all this without reaching the eighties or naming directors. He has also shared the screen with many younger talents through later decades, as expected. Some other remarkable names, such as PENN, CRUISE, KEATON, JULIA ROBERTS, MORTENSEN or BALE come to mind. And many, many more. A whole lotta host of stars among which, Duvall stood out almost unintentionally.

As for his roles, a lot to be mentioned. Too many to do him justice in what is supposed to be a brief tribute to his life and achievements. Some of them belong to the popular culture of the last decades, as do many of the movies he's been part of. We have his silent performance in TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD (ROBERT MULLIGAN, 1962), classics such as NETWORK (directed by SIDNEY LUMET, 1976) or the film he owes his sole Academy Award to (back when those awards meant something and indicated, at least in principle, the quality of the awarded products), TENDER MERCIES (BRUCE BERESFORD, 1983).

But I guess he will always be most remembered for what I deem his two most iconic roles (thanks to which he was also nominated by the Academy): the consigliere TOM HAGEN in THE GODFATHER I y II (both directed by FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA and premiered in 1972 and 1974 respectively), and lieutenant colonel BILL KILGORE in APOCALYPSE NOW (1979, also by Coppola). Unforgettable that little speech as Kilgore which began with the line I love the smell of napalm in the morning, and finished with another one every bit as glorious: It smells like victory. In fact, the former is so legendary that it is ranked as the twelfth most iconic movie quote ever, according to the list that the AMERICAN FILM INSTITUTE made in its day.

He has died at home, apparently, and no cause has made public, so I just hope it was a natural death due to age, and with no suffering whatsoever.
