GRACIAS POR TODO, CLINT

No puedo negar que esta noticia me pilla un poco por sorpresa, y que es hasta inoportuna en cuanto al momento, pues Clint Eastwood cumplió años hace muy poco y en la entrada de aquel día resalté la posibilidad de que pronto pudiese haber alguna noticia acerca de un nuevo trabajo con la leyenda detrás de la cámara, dado el entusiasmo con el que el entorno del propio Clint se apresuró a decir que éste seguiría leyendo nuevos guiones, descartando así una jubilación inmediatamente posterior al estreno de JUROR #2 (JURADO Nº2), estrenada en el último tramo de 2024.

Pero parece que las cosas han cambiado y que el bueno de Clint ha decidido poner punto final a su carrera. Ya lo había hecho, de manera definitiva (tras varias ocasiones en las que parecía que sí y al final era que no), en cuanto a su faceta como actor, con el estreno en 2021 de CRY MACHO, también dirigida por él, y ahora parece que es también su trabajo como director el que termina del todo. Como ya dije en su día, me alegra mucho que la muy valiosa Jurado Nº2 haya sido su despedida, ya que Cry Macho, sin ser una mala cinta, distaba mucho de llegar al nivel habitual del conjunto de su obra.

Fiel a su perfil bajo habitual, no ha habido grandes despedidas ni nada de eso. Él mismo se ha ido apartando poco a poco y ni siquiera ha sido él quien ha anunciado la noticia de su jubilación, si no que fue su hijo mayor, KYLE, en una entrevista con un medio francés el pasado Noviembre, quien dejó caer todo esto. Este detalle es lo único que trae consigo una cierta incertidumbre al respecto; no por el hecho de que hable Kyle en nombre de su padre, si no por que no se haya dicho nada sobre esto durante este tiempo, si de verdad la noticia es cierta, y que simplemente se de por hecho ese retiro gracias a una entrevista (de la que se sabe ahora) relativamente antigua y sin que haya un mínimo anuncio oficial.

De todas formas, esto está por todos los sitios, por lo que supongo que no hay vuelta atrás.

Quizás podría ser un malentendido, o algo que Kyle ha dado por hecho sin estar seguro del todo. O puede que Clint esté esperando a estar seguro del todo para hacer un anuncio oficial. No tiene pinta, pero quién sabe?

Lo cierto es que, cuando me enteré de la noticia, el mismo día del anuncio y un poco de casualidad, me llevé un ligero disgusto. Lo que he comentado antes sobre que la noticia me pillase de sorpresa es relativo, por supuesto, ya que la jubilación de alguien que está más cerca de los cien años que de los noventa no puede sorprender a nadie. Pero, aún así, no he podido evitar notar lo amargo e inevitable de algo como esto, y no voy a negar que me hacía ilusión saber que algo nuevo podría anunciarse en unos meses. O cuando fuera.

No me estoy quejando. No podría pedir más. Recientemente he leído un libro, relativamente breve, sobre su carrera (sobre todo detrás de la cámara), y sólo eso ha hecho que me vengan las ganas de volver a ver todas su pelis y olvidarme, al menos por un tiempo, del cine actual. Me dedicaré a eso mientras Clint sigue con sus cosas de todos los días, como el piano, el cine clásico y su familia, y me conformaré con ir sabiendo que él sigue sano y bien, ya que lo que me preocupó de la noticia es que ésta pudiese coincidir con un deterioro de su salud.

El próximo veintitrés de Diciembre se cumplirán sesenta años del estreno en Italia de IL BUONO, IL BRUTTO, IL CATTIVO (EL BUENO, EL FEO Y EL MALO), de SERGIO LEONE. Casi todo ese tiempo ha tardado Clint Eastwood en jubilarse del todo (aquellas primeras películas con Leone le pillaron ya en sus treinta y tantos) y son unos sesenta los años que lleva siendo una estrella del séptimo arte.

Sobra decir que se ha ganado hacer lo que le de la gana, y cuando él quiera.

THANKS FOR EVERYTHING, CLINT!

I can't deny these are surprising and even untimely news, concerning their timing, for Clint Eastwood turned ninety six a little while ago and on that day's entry I remarked that there was a very good chance of some news about a new film of his behind the camera being unveiled, given the enthusiasm with which Clint's own environment had rushed to say that he would go on reading new scripts, thus dismissing the possibility of his retirement after the premiere of JUROR #2, which took place during the last stretch of 2024.

But it seems like someone's changed his mind and good old Clint has finally called his filmaking career a day. He already did, and for good (after several times in which it seemed like he was going to, but he wasn't), regarding his acting days, with the premiere in 2021 of CRY MACHO, also directed by him, and now he is putting and end to his directing career as well. As I said, back in the day, I'm really glad that the awesome Juror #2 is his farewell film, because Cry Macho, far from being a bad flick, was far removed from his overall career's high standards.

Faithful to his low key nature, there have been no big goodbyes or fanfare. He has quietly removed himself from the spotlight and it wasn't even him who announced the retirement, but his oldest son, KYLE, who, in an interview for some french online magazine from last November, opened himself about his dad's working status. This detail is the only thing that makes me a tad uncertain about the whole thing; not because of the fact that is Kyle who speaks on his behalf, but because nothing has been said about this issue ever since the last film or that interview, if the news are true, and because Clint's retirement is taken for granted thanks to a relatively old interview (about which we all do know now), without no official announcement.

In any case, the news are everywhere, so I guess there's no turning back.

It could all be a misunderstanding, or something that Kyle stated without being completely certain about it. Or perhaps Clint is just waiting until he is completely sure, so he can issue some kind of public announcement. It doesn't look like it, but who knows?

Truth is, when I learnt about this, on the same day the news went public and by coincidence, I experienced a bitter feeling. What I said about being surprised is only relative, of course, because the retirement of anyone who happens to be closer to being one hundred years old than being ninety could not surprise anybody. And yet, I can't help but feeling the bitterness of the inevitability of something like this, and I can't deny that I was enthused to know that news regarding some new work of his might be revealed in the upcoming months. Or whenever it could be.

I'm not complaining. I could not ask for more. Recently I read a short book about his career (behind the camera, mostly), and only that has been enough for me to be eager to watch all his movies again and forget, at least for a while, about the state of today's filmaking. That's what I will do while Clint sticks with his everyday passions, such as piano playing, classic films and his family, and I will be content with the news of his being healthy and well, for the only thing that worried me about the news was thinking that they might have arrived due to his health getting worse.

The next 23rd of December will mark the sixtieth anniversary of the italian premiere of IL BUONO, IL BRUTTO, IL CATTIVO (THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY), by SERGIO LEONE. It has taken Clint almost that long to completely retire (those first movies with Leone were shot when he was already in his thirties) and he's been a movie star more or less ever since. A good sixty plus years.

There's no need to say he's earned his right to do anything he wants to, and anytime he feels like doing it.
