O a cualquier otra selección, casi.

ENGLISH
WHAT'S WITH ARGENTINA?
I can't help writing about Argentina after what took place at the last World Cup. There's a lot more about this country, I know, but, to me, it has always been about DIEGO MARADONA, ALFREDO DI STÉFANO, JOAQUÍN LAVADO (QUINO, MAFALDA's unforgettable creator) and RICARDO DARÍN (the entire world's best spanish-speaking actor). A country that I've always been fond of, ever since I can remember, for being the closest one to us in the whole of South America. It's long been on my to visit list as well.
Sports-wise, Argentina has always been very close to REAL MADRID. I won't even talk about Don Alfredo and everything he meant and means for the club. Once Spain was sent home at the 1986 World Cup, I had no doubt which country I had to root for. In that Argentine squad, its sole member playing for Madrid was JORGE VALDANO (another one of my childhood heroes) because, back in the day, the number of foreign players per club was quite restricted (just two, if memory serves, being the legendary HUGO SÁNCHEZ the other one on the payroll), and ÓSCAR RUGGERI (who, besides that World Cup, went on to sweep all that year's trophies playing for RIVER PLATE) would arrive three years later. If I am not mistaken, Jorge was an undisputed starter in every single game, and he scored four goals, which included that second one during the final game (two-nil at that moment), when he got one on one with SCHUMACHER (the german keeper) and beat him with an outstanding calmness, given the circumstances. Valdano was really good, and how happy I was on that day; for the Argentines and for Real Madrid, given the prestige that comes with having a world champion in the ranks.
And what to say about Maradona? He was some sort of common thread during those football days and during the childhood of many of us. After his controversial tenure in Spain, Diego had arrived in Italy and was hell bent on leaving that country upside down (on a social level too), turning NAPOLI, a club struggling to belong into the italian elite, into a feared and succesful powerhouse. With all due respect for his teammates, be it in an on the rise Napoli (regarding its football and squad), or with the Albiceleste shirt, Diego was achieving something that could pass as the most similar thing to an impossibility that I can remember: to become such a differential factor inside either squad, as to be capable to win, almost on his own, within the boundaries of a team sport. Those Neapolitan years of glory, or that 1986 World Cup for that matter, cannot be understood without his enormous influence, to an extent that, in my opinion, has not matched. Before or since.
This is silly stuff on my part, I know, but I will speak my mind anyway: I've always been very proud of having been able to watch that goal of his against England, the best one in history, live. When I say live, I mean at the same time, as it happened. Not at the stadium, in Mexico, of course. But live, after all. Never in my entire life will I forget that moment, or how one of my dad's friends reacted as Diego was leaving englishmen behind. Neither that legendary broadcast by VÍCTOR HUGO MORALES, which has gone hand in hand with that goal ever since, and pictured perfectly the whole world's amazement at what was seen on that 22nd of June. Maradona, who had already scored a first goal (the legendary Hand Of God), few minutes into the second half, received, four minutes later (it was the fifty fifth minute, I guess) and still on Argentina's half, the ball from HÉCTOR ENRIQUE. And then, like sixty metres away from PETER SHILTON's goal, he got rid of two defenders and started to run. I am aware of Maradona's very own looks, and also of the fact that he's been very often deemed as chubby and shorty (Morales himself came up with Diego's glorious depiction as Barrilete Cósmico, spanish for Little Cosmic Barrel, during that play, as well as the Genio, Genio... Ta, Ta, Ta, Ta catchphrase), and there's no question he has tried his best to enhance it, from time to time, due to his excesses (even to the point of being close to die much earlier than he did), but those who remain skeptical, and the younger audiences as well, should have seen him on that famed play: during ten and a half bound for glory seconds, Diego ran, give or take, fifty two metres, touching (snuggling) the ball around twelve times, at a speed of between fourteen and nineteen kilometres per hour, and under really hot and humid circumstances, to leave behind every english player in his path (GLENN HODDLE, PETER REID, TERRY BUTCHER and TERRY FENWICK, some of them even twice, did not stand a chance), dribble past Shilton as well, and score what FIFA ended up considering the best goal in the entire history of the world cups. GARY LINEKER scored for England, like ten minutes before the final whistle, and Argentina had a difficult time to reach the finish line, but Diego's two goals were enough to accomplish a victory which, back in the day, was much more than just that for the Argentines, only four years after the Falklands War.
And what do you think about those two goals he scored again against Belgium in the semis, maybe a tad overshadowed by that England's game? The first one was world class, no pun intended, but the second one was sheer football glory. Or that assist to another Jorge, BURRUCHAGA, in the final, very close to the game's end and only three minutes after KARL-HEINZ RUMMENIGGE and RUDI VÖLLER had reduced to nothing the two-goal lead that Argentina had first gotten? Any other player would be scared in a moment like that, but he could not care less. He knew, deep inside, that Argentina would win, and that's what it did.
Four years later, in a less remarkable Italian World Cup by the Argentines, but quite commendable by Diego (even if he did not score), who usually played on painkillers, we got the same final game (with Germany already unified), but different outcome. That penalty goal by deceased German midfielder ANDREAS BREHME, very close to the end, really pissed me off. I felt sorry for Argentina and for Maradona. And yet, there was enough time for Diego to make football history: first, with his ridiculously good move to leave CLAUDIO CANIGGIA one on one with the Brazilian keeper, in the last sixteen round, and second, with all the controversy unleashed as the result of the clash between Italy, the host and Maradona's then home, and Argentina in the semifinals, which escalated to the final game as well. In the first example, Argentina ousted a Carioca squad which was the overwhelming favourite and was pushing the Argentines to their limits during the game. In the second, everything that took place is best understood if we analyze the social fracture that there was between the wealthy Italian north and the much more humble south, to which Napoli belongs. Given the game was hosted at San Paolo, Napoli's home, Maradona, who had lived all that's been just mentioned first hand, asked the people in Naples for their support for his Argentina, shaping a legenday controversy in Italy. The Argentine squad, coming from behind after the goal scored by the also untimely deceased SALVATORE SCHILLACHI, who became really famous after that tournament, sent Italy home in the shootout. Already in the final, the Roman attendance took revenge and booed Argentina's anthem. While it was being played, the TV showed an undisguised picture of Diego calling the Italian fans Sons of bitches.
I got really sad when he died, almost six years ago. Even more than when Di Stéfano did. Don Alfredo left us at a very advanced age, after having lived a full life and dying Real Madrid's (an institution that owes him everything) Honorary President. But Maradona enjoyed little of that. I have no doubt about his life being a rollercoaster of emotions (some of them too strong), or about his enjoying most of it, beyond football too. But I'm almost certain too that, looking in hindsight, he would have chosen something different for him and his loved ones. The way he left this mortal coil was quite sad. I did not care about his shenanigans, his controversies, his addcitions or his politics. The day he died, this sport died a little too. And a fair share of our childhood did as well.
What planet did you come from, king of all football?
*Speaking of deaths, and even if this has nothing to do with Argentina, I have just learnt about FRANCO BARESI's passing. Italy's legendary captain was one of the most relevant modern footballers to ever play the game, and a stalwart of AC MILAN and Italy's National Squad. He was in that game (he scored Italy's first penalty kick during the shootout) in which his country was beaten by the Argentines, in Naples, and, among many other achievements, he still is, if I'm not mistaken, one of the only three footballers (together with Germany's FRANZ BECKENBAUER, another legend who passed away recently, and MIROSLAV KLOSE) to have ever accomplished a first (1982), second (1994) and third (1990) spot at the world cups. Maradona himself, still playing in Italy, dedicated the most sincere of words to him, naming Baresi the best defender in the world. And he was much more than that. This anecdote happened after a Napoli's game against AC Milan (both clubs dominated the italian football during the second half of the eighties) at San Paolo, and Diego was wearing Baresi's shirt at that very moment. It needs to be reminded that Baresi's team was Napoli's biggest rival then, and the best example (together with Milan's INTERNAZIONALE and Turin's JUVENTUS) of a northern Italian club. All those insults and hurtful remarks the Neapolitans were welcomed with when visiting San Siro, such as Benvenuti In Italia are relevant now. That's why, if with all these circumstances included, this tribute by Diego Maradona himself isn't one of the best testimonies concerning this player's greatness, I do not know which one is. Here's the story:
Gone too soon. Rest in peace. The same wish applies to KEVIN KEEGAN, the aforementioned Beckenbauer and Schillachi, GERD MÜLLER, and all those idols from not very long ago, who are leaving us little by little, and some of them at a very young age.
Back to Argentina. As I said, there's much more about Argentina that has nothing to do with football. That country has been home to many glorious tennis players. They do not need to be mentioned, but I find most of them quite likeable. As for me, I also listen to some music from Argentina. Above all, everything related to HERMÉTICA and deceased Argentine musician RICARDO IORIO.
That's why I'd have never rooted for Germany before Argentina. The same can be said about England, Brazil, etc. However, as of today, and since many years, I can't picture myself rooting for the Argentines before any of those countries. Or almost any other country for that matter. I guess it all started with MESSI and the insufferable inclination of most of the sport media (or general news media), no matter its club leanings, to rule out any kind of debate in which this player is not put on the most absolute top of football's Olympuses. I don't mean discussing whether Messi is the best player or not; I mean just that to be debated. There can be no debate. It has to be this way or no way at all. I'm pretty sure a BARCELONA fan will be delighted, but there are tons of Madrid ones who are too. And it's ok. If Messi is your Goat of choice, good for you. But do not lecture anybody else. It is a legend, a world class footballer and one of the best ever we are talking about, no doubt, but, in my opinion, all those marketing or media campaigns do little favour to anyone. When you are constantly exposed to something, you tend to reject it.
And then there's the behaviour of this current squad which, for the most part, is the same one as in the last 2022 World Cup. I won't talk about the way it plays football, and I will not even mention the really strange stuff (also concerning the officiating, of course) that has been seen during the last two world events, something that everyone keeps in mind and has done nothing but raising suspicions and encouraging the overall animosity against this Argentina. I'm talking about that idea that has always been gospel for Argentina's football, and that this bunch of players has highlighted more than ever, which consists in believing that all those who abide by the rules when playing football, without not trying to play a little bit dirty and under the radar, while making the most of it, are losers. This is football, or so they say. The Potrero, as they call it. This is meant to be for men, for actual tough guys.
No. It is not. There are rules, and they are there for a reason. They are for everyone to follow. You can try your luck at some other sport if you don't like them. But one would think that, given the Argentines are so faithful to that creed, they would stick to it when times are tough. Rough guys business, right? But in the end, aren't the Argentines the biggest of crybabies? Perhaps that contradiction is just another trait of that creed.
Same applies for many of its most fanatical supporters, who have chosen this moment, but no other before it along the last four years, to unveil conspiracy theories of all kinds, and everywhere, instead of showing the minimum dignity needed to congratulate an opponent who's been better, and to move on. That thing with all the subsequent cancellations threats, to celebrities who have publicly supported Spain (even being Spaniards themselves), and all the backtracking by all those who have been threatened is worthy of mention. Some people in Spain are also to be blamed here. Honorable mention goes to ROSALÍA, Spanish singer and global star, who is a very courageous and committed girl, but only to a certain extent. The Los Perlas affair hasn't been very well received by the Argentines, and some apologies were due. There's also one of our favourite and most cherished guardians of the woke moral superiority, preachy extraordinaire JAVIER BARDEM, who also had to tinge some words of his concerning JAVIER MILEI and how this person's behaviour impacts on certain things and so on. On the international stage, we have american singer PATTI SMITH, godmother of punk, and one post of hers on social media, regarding one of our most stupid football players on the Spanish squad and the Palestinian cause. The Argentinian fandom wasn't happy with Patti titling that post The Good Ones, reaching the conclusion that they have no choice but to become the evil ones (???). It sucks for them, of course, but it's also quite remarkable that there are so many moralist people whose opinions and principles take an immediate back seat when needed (GROUCHO MARX very well said it once: Those are my principles, and if you don't like them... well, I have others). Most of the times, when those people sense some kind of threat to their pockets. Very deep ones indeed, by the way.
Some other reactions acroos the pond, like collecting signatures for the final game to be replayed, are just risible. Sheer art. I'm sure not every Argentinian fan is like that. Not even close. In fact, there are almost more Argentines than Spaniards in my place of work, and I don't know what they all have in mind, but at least two of them have come to me to congratulate me for Spain's victory. I have no doubt I am not the only one they have shown their good wishes to.
As for the Argentinian squad itself, and also its staff, it's been terrible watching Messi as he pointed his finger at one referee's face, demanding his respect, and with zero consequences; or as he tried his best for CUCURELLA to be sent off in the final, in the most despicable of fashions, only because the latter covered his mouth with his hand. Another honorable mention goes to his attempt to distract the ref, once that ENZO FERNÁNDEZ's had gotten a red card for being completely irresponsible, highlighting as an aggression the fake act staged by one of his teammates (NICOLÁS TAGLIAFICO, I think), who, far away from the ball or any other player, had collapsed exactly the very moment Enzo's senseless tackle had taken place. Pathetic.
Even worse was what happened after the final whistle. I'm talking about the Argentine players turning their backs on the Spanish ones, while the trophy was being lifted. That was sad. But much worse was, the fight that ensued as the consequence of the shameful behaviour of people like MOLINA, PAREDES or AYALA. As you can see, the technical staff also pays its part. Only SCALONI, and some other shining exceptions, have acted with enough dignity. But the manager would do well to sleep on the code of the players he coaches.
We all have also witnessed moments from the last two World Cups in which the shithousery of the Argentines has been on top form. Not to mention disgraceful celebrations in the face of all the peers they had defeated. What would have happened the other way around? What would have been the narrative, had someone called Messi Bobo, the same way he did to some Dutch footballer in Qatar? We have been triggered, haven't we? Bad winners, sore losers.
I know these words won't reach anywhere, but I don't care. This is my own slap on the wrist. And there's no need to say that almost everything I have talked about is also my tribute to a country I am really fond of. Much like Messi has been one of this sport's main faces during the last twenty years, Argentina, as a country, has also been one in his own right. Always. This is not about the country, but about the way they understand football. It would be a good thing if they took a good look in the mirror. For football's sake, but mostly for their own.
See ya soon!
