SCOTT BURNS es una persona poco (o muy poco) conocida para el gran público. Pero para cualquiera que esté un poco interesado en el heavy metal y haya querido informarse un poco, este nombre resultará familiar. Y si el sujeto en cuestión es fan del death metal, mayormente americano, y tiene ya una cierta edad, no sólo sabrá de quién estamos hablando, si no que estará de acuerdo en que Burns es una figura fundamental dentro del metal extremo, estando asociado su nombre a algunos de los discos más famosos y exitosos del género. Un auténtico pionero, en este sentido, sobre todo como productor.

Este libro acerca de su obra y milagros, escrito por DAVID E. GEHLKE (ya conocido por aquí, al ser el autor de DAMN THE MACHINE: THE STORY OF NOISE RECORDS, editado en 2017 y muy utilizado a la hora de hablar sobre HELLOWEEN en un par de entradas de hace algún año: VICTIMS OF FATE y RISE & FALL), no ha sido editado en España, como era de esperar, y me ha costado hasta encontrar una foto decente para poner por aquí. De hecho, hay muy poca información sobre el propio Burns por ahí. Información personal, me refiero, ya que ni siquiera el propio libro incluye nada acerca de su edad o dónde nació. Digamos que Burns es un señor que ha de rondar los sesenta años, si no los tiene ya, y que es originario de Florida. No se trata de información imprescindible, claro está, pero es relevante, puesto que el último dato lo hace compartir, o casi, lugar de origen con algunos de los grupos más importantes que luego produciría, y el primero lo sitúa como una persona contemporánea, más o menos, con respecto a la mayoría de protagonistas en esos grupos.

Todo empieza con un prólogo del también muy famoso productor sueco de metal extremo DAN SWANÖ, y otro del propio Gehlke, quien pone énfasis en la naturaleza amable y amistosa de Burns, y en su don de gentes, algo que será una constante durante todo el libro. Y éste consiste en un recuento, año por año (desde 1987, nada menos), de todos los discos (más de cien) en cuya grabación ha participado Burns, con fotos y recuerdos de los protagonistas, ya sean músicos, fotógrafos, ejecutivos o el propio Scott.

No me voy a extender mucho. El libro es más que entretenido, y sobre todo atractivo, si eres aficionado de los grupos que aparecen en él (muchos y muy famosos: SEPULTURA, DEATH, CORONER, PESTILENCE, DEICIDE, ATHEIST, OBITUARY, SUFFOCATION, GORGUTS, CANNIBAL CORPSE y muchos otros), y ya no digamos si estás un poco puesto en temas técnicos y relacionados con la grabación y producción de discos. Pero hay mucho más. Hay grupos que conocía pero no me interesaban o no había escuchado, pero también un montón de ellos de los que no sabía nada y que me han gustado mucho. Además están las anécdotas, propias y ajenas, y ciertas historias que abarcan todo tipo de emociones. Y casi todo, dentro del marco de los míticos estudios MORRISOUND RECORDING de Tampa, Florida, inaugurados en 1981 (por los hermanos MORRIS, JIM y TOM, también propietarios), y convertidos en una especie de santuario del metal extremo desde entonces, en el que Burns ha desarrollado casi toda su carrera.

En este sentido, me quedo con la aparición de un grupo como los suizos Coroner, con su disco NO MORE COLOR, de 1989, en el que Burns participó como ingeniero, ya que me encanta este grupo y en ese apartado participa TOMMY VETTERLI, el guitarrista del grupo, a quien tuve la suerte de entrevistar hace apenas un mes (TOMMY VETTERLI). Pero sobre todo, con todas las cosas que se cuentan acerca de quien es muy probable que sea el personaje más relevante del death metal y también el más famoso. Estoy hablando del difunto CHUCK SCHULDINER, alma y líder de Death; alguien de quien siempre se ha destacado su amabilidad, además de algunas de las virtudes comentadas sobre el protagonista del libro. No se niega nada de esto aquí, pero tengo que reconocer que no me ha hecho especial gracia saber algunas cosas sobre él. Pero bueno, nadie dijo que fuese alguien perfecto.

Además de todo eso, el viaje de Burns a Brasil para grabar BENEATH THE REMAINS, de Sepultura, las movidas internas en Cannibal Corpse, las peculiaridades de un tipo completamente fuera de lo común como GLEN BENTON, y mucho más. Pero sobre todo, música de la buena.

Scott dejó este negocio, para dedicarse a la informática, a finales de los noventa. Por lo visto terminó bastante cansado de hacer lo mismo durante tanto tiempo y de manera tan intensa. Lo peor de todo es que ni siquiera eso le sirvió para ganar mucho dinero y poder estar tranquilo. Al revés, él mismo destaca la tranquilidad que en este sentido le supuso tener un trabajo, digamos, normal, lo cual es bastante triste, no? Ha hecho alguna cosa aquí y allá después de 1997, pero más por tener algún detalle con alguien que por un deseo de dedicarse a producir otra vez.

Y hablando de Death y de Chuck, Gehlke será nuevamente noticia en Noviembre, ya que será entonces cuando un nuevo libro suyo acerca del famoso músico verá la luz. Se trata de una biografía autorizada sobre su vida y su carrera que tendrá por título BORN HUMAN: THE LIFE AND MUSIC OF DEATH'S CHUCK SCHULDINER.

SCOTT BURNS may not be a household name for the world at large. But anyone who is a little bit interested in metal music, and has been willing to collect some information along the way, might find this name familiar. And if that specific individual is a death metal (the american branch, mostly) fan and is around their fifties or older, not only will know who we are talking about, but also will agree on Burns being a paramount figure within the extreme metal realm, for his name is synonimous with some of the most famous and successful records in all extreme music. A true trailblazer in this regard, mostly as a producer.

This book about his life story, written by DAVID E. GEHLKE (already known around here for being the author of DAMN THE MACHINE: THE STORY OF NOISE RECORDS, published in 2017 and very much used when I wrote about HELLOWEEN in a couple of entries from a few years back: VICTIMS OF FATE and RISE & FALL), hasn't been published in Spain, as expected, and I even had a hard time trying to find a decent picture of it to be posted. In fact, there's not much information about Burns himself around here. Personal stuff, I mean, because not even the book says anything about how old he is or where he was born. Not that this is essential, you know, but let's say that he is a guy who is almost sixty, if he's not there already, and who hails from Florida, and this is important, for the latter fact means he shares (or almost) origin with some of the most notorious bands he would later work with,  and the former makes him a contemporary, more or less, of most of the guys in those bands.

It includes a preface by the also very famous swedish extreme metal producer DAN SWANÖ, and another one by Gehlke himself, who remarks Burns' kind and friendly nature, and his people skills, something that will become a constant during the entire thing. The book consists of a yearly account (since 1987, no less) of every single record (more than one hundred) in whose recording Burns has taken part of, with pictures and recollections of the people involved, be them musicians, photographers, executives or Scott himself.

I won't make it very long. This book is plain fun, and also appealing, if you are into some of the bands you can read about inside (many and very well known one: SEPULTURA, DEATH, CORONER, PESTILENCE, DEICIDE, ATHEIST, OBITUARY, SUFFOCATION, GORGUTS, CANNIBAL CORPSE and many others), not to mention how interesting it could be for someone who's into technical stuff, recording and producing. But there's much more. There are some bands I already knew but I wasn't interested in, and also a bunch of them I knew nothing about and I have really enjoyed. And there's also the tall tales, by himself and others, and some stories which cover all kinds of emotions. And almost all this, within the framework of the legendary MORRISOUND RECORDING studios in Tempe, Florida, opened in 1981 (by the MORRIS brothers, JIM and TOM, also owners), and turned into some kind of extreme metal mecca ever since, in which Burns has developed almost his entire career.

In this regard, I have to pick Switzerland's Coroner entry, with their album NO MORE COLOR, from 1989, which Burns engineered, because I happen to love this band and there are a few word by the great TOMMY VETTERLI, Coroner's guitar player, whom I was lucky to interview barely a month ago (TOMMY VETTERLI). But above all things, all the stuff about whom might be death metal's most famous and iconic character. I'm talking about no other than the late CHUCK SCHULDINER, Death's leader and soul; someone about whom kindness has always been remarked as a trait, besides some of the virtues already attributed to this book's protagonist. None of those things are denied here, but I have to admit feeling a little bit sad after learning some things about him. But no one's perfect after all, are they?

There's also Burns trip to Brazil, to record Sepultura's BENEATH THE REMAINS, internal stuff among Cannibal Corpse's members, the oddities of someone as out of the ordinary as GLEN BENTON is, and much more. Music mostly, and a very good one.

Scott retired from the music industry, to devote himself to computer programming or something similar, by the end of the nineties. Apparently, he got fed up of doing the same thing for so long and in such an intense fashion. The worst thing about it is that one would presume that all those years of hard work allowed him to be quite comfortable on the money front, but quite the contrary. He remarks the peace of mind which came with having a, let's say, ordinary job, which is quite sad, isn't it? He's done a few things here and there after 1997, but mostly out of respect to someone, and not because he wishes to produce on a regular basis again.

And speaking of Death and Chuck, Gehlke will be the talk of the town once again in November, which is when his new book about the famed musician will be published. It's an authorized biography about his life and his career we are talking about, and it will be titled BORN HUMAN: THE LIFE AND MUSIC OF DEATH'S CHUCK SCHULDINER.
